Malena’s & Charlie Dog Vintage Collaboration

I’ve always been a fan of working with other small business owners.  We consistently refer buyers and sellers to Lulu’s, Briar, Christine’s, Twinkle, Revivals and A. Brandt and Son, just to name a few. I met Mike and Claire of Charlie Dog Vintage through our space at Kennett Square WorKS.  Charlie Dog Vintage specializes vintage menswear and in specialty vintage tee shirts, work wear, and unique militaria clothing.  Over the past few years, we have sold back and forth to each other and even gone to house calls together.

The Process

While brainstorming ideas for our first showroom sale of 2019 I thought it would be a great idea to host Charlie Dog Vintage’s goods for a Sunday sale.  For the marketing materials, we called on Sabina Sister to photograph it and Katie Single to model.  In my heart of hearts, I wanted to shoot outside, but  Pennsylvania in dreary February isn’t exactly the best backdrop for a Spring Preview event. We chose to shoot in my home and incorporate my furniture and vintage taxidermy.  Mike and Claire selected a variety of pieces including a fantastic vintage jumpsuit and perfectly torn high waisted jeans.

But why would we mix tees & gowns?

Fanciful clothing bits typically reserved for evening are just too pretty to hide away only to be worn a few times a year. By mixing them into your daily wardrobe you can maximize their use. Sequinned cardigans over tees can be fun, or adding a tee to a flowing evening skirt with fun slip on sneakers can make for interesting pairing. Who doesn’t remember Carrie Bradshaw in that fancy tulle skirt and tank top?!

We perched Katie and Sabina on top of furniture, shot through staircase railings, and since we couldn’t relocate my chandelier decided to shoot through the crystals. Just days before one of our favorite sellers had brough in a wild velvet rug in saturated color with cherubs. I still can’t decide if I need to keep it…

Now, for the goods! What did we pair with Charlie Dog Vintage?

The shoot was a great success in a short turnaround. Here are some of our favorite shots.

The background was about 4 yards of Peter Max influenced 1970s fabric. We hung it up against my antique Barrister's bookcase. The men's coveralls from Charlie Dog Vintage are by Lee circa the 1950s. Underneath Katie's wearing a tie halter top in black with silver Lorax threads. We perched a silver sequinned pill box with combs slightly askew on her head.

Why not throw a 60s crochet bolero over a 90s Adidas tee with green work pants?

An oversized denim jacket is always a good choice to throw on, and when we saw this one from Charlie Dog Vintage we knew it'd be perfect. We think it's spectacular over this 70s floral printed silk gown.

Really, this needs no explanation... BUT. The classic leather moto jacket over the coolest pom-pom cotton dress. What's not to love?

If you're around the shop in the summer, you know kimonos are basically a rite of passage. Here, we threw an antique silk printed kimono over a perfectly worn 50s graphic tee, and layered it all on top of a fitted gold lamé dress with coral plastic beads for fun.

Finally, we have Katie sprawled out over that velvet rug I was talking about in a cut-off 80s Iron Maiden tee and one of our sequinned China Poblana skirts. We added a 60s beaded collar for giggles.

I hope you’ll be able to join us for the sale on March 31st.  Since purging about 25 bags of inventory which was roughly over 200 pieces our racks are filled with new merchandise, and if it’s not new it’s probably 50% off. You can find some of the pieces shown above in our Etsy shop, or on Instagram!
